British Female Solo Artist nominations announced

The contenders for British Female this year are Adele, Amy Winehouse, Florence and The Machine, Jess Glynne and Laura Marling.

Following the release of the 2015 biopic ‘Amy’, Amy Winehouse has been nominated for British Female for a fifth time in BRITs history. This marks Winehouse’s second posthumous nomination in this category following her death in 2011, and her eighth BRITs nomination in total. She previously won the award in 2007, following the worldwide success of her album, ‘Back To Black’.

Adele, alongside James Bay and Year & Years, is one of 2016’s most-nominated acts, with four nods in total. As well as British Female (an award she took home in 2012), she will compete to win British Single and British Video for ‘Hello’ and MasterCard British Album for her third album ‘25’. Adele has a long history at The BRIT Awards and was the first ever recipient of the Critics’ Choice Award in 2008. This year she will perform on the night, following her unforgettable rendition of ‘Someone Like You’ in 2011.

Another multiple-nominee at this year’s awards is relative newcomer Jess Glynne, who is up for three BRITs: British Female, British Breakthrough and British Single for ‘Hold My Hand’. Glynne performed alongside Clean Bandit at last year’s nominations launch, and this year’s ‘The BRITs Are Coming’ nominations launch event on 14 January will see her take to the stage in her own right.

Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine will be hoping that it’s third time lucky in 2016, having been unsuccessfully nominated in the category in both 2010 and 2012. This year she will also battle fellow category nominee Adele for MasterCard British Album for her third album ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’. Welch has previously taken home the British Album award in 2010 for her debut ‘Lungs’.

Nominee Laura Marling is also no stranger to nomination in this category, having been up for the award in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Marling won the award in 2011 though has been unsuccessful since. Could 2016 be her year once more?

The BRIT Awards 2016 take place at London’s O2 Arena on 24 February and will be broadcast live on ITV at 8pm GMT. See all the nominations here.
