Critics Choice 2008 - ADELE

10th December, 2007

Nineteen year old Brit singer songwriter ADELE has been unveiled today as the winner of The BRITs brand new award, ‘Critics Choice’, by The BPI, the UK recorded music industry association. Voted for by a panel of music experts, ADELE topped the critics’ list as the most exciting new British artist expected to “make it big” in 2008.

The ‘Critics Choice’ Award focuses on new British acts the critics are tipping to break through in 2008. The winner has been chosen by a team of experts made up of the music editors of national newspapers, key music and lifestyle magazines and music websites plus the heads of music at major radio and music TV stations. The ‘Critics Choice’ Award was open to artists signed to a label who are set to release their debut albums in 2008.

ADELE will receive her award at the BRIT Awards with MasterCard on 20th February 2008 at London’s Earls Court. Chairman of The BRITs Committee Ged Doherty said, “Huge congratulations to ADELE. I know the competition was fierce in this, the inaugural year of this award, and she is a worthy winner.”

Other serious contenders for the Critics Choice Award included North Wales’ chanteuse Duffy and irrepressible angular rockers Foals. The results for the Critics Choice Award have been exclusively announced on the brand new BRITs website (at www.brits.co.uk) which goes live today, 10th December, 2007.

On her BRIT win ADELE said, “I’m really chuffed and flattered to have won the new category. It’s fantastic to have lots of people supporting me and nice to know. I’ve always wanted a BRIT award and I’m made up to be getting one so early on! Thank you very much to everyone who voted!”

Following the release of her debut 7” single “Hometown Glory” on Jamie T’s Pacemaker label back in October, a striking performance on Later With Jools Holland, and a sold out UK tour, ADELE has been subject of a whirlwind of critical acclaim in all areas of music media. She releases her debut album, “19” on XL Recordings in January.
