Critics' Choice nominee: Sam Smith

Sam Smith is no stranger to success. He was the voice behind Naughty Boy’s La La La, which reached the summit of the UK Singles Chart in May; and just weeks later he helped propel Disclosure’s Settle to be No. 1 album after lending his voice to their breakthrough track Latch.

Originally from Bishops Stortford, the 21-year old is hoping to break through in 2014 as an artist in his own right.

On hearing his debut EP Nirvana - released earlier this year – it’ll come as no surprise to hear Sam grew up imitating the likes of Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan and Frank Sinatra, with ‘80s R&B and classic soul strongly resonating in his music.

Sam said on his nomination: “I have watched the BRITs religiously for many years growing up.

“The people who have won before are to this day some of my favourite artists and biggest inspirations. So to even be up for this award is completely overwhelming for me.

“I can't begin to tell you how thankful I am!”
