BRITs 2016 British Single nominees

British Single nominations announced

The British Single category for the BRIT Awards 2016 pits last year’s biggest and best tracks against each other. Past BRIT winners Adele, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding and James Bay go up against Calvin Harris, Jess Glynne, Olly Murs, Years & Years and first time BRIT nominees Little Mix and Philip George.

Previous BRITs Critics’ Choice Award recipients Adele and James Bay and 2015 Critics’ Choice nominees Years & Years lead the nominations this year with 4 apiece. Years & Years’ ‘King’ goes up against James Bay’s ‘Hold Back The River’ and Adele’s ‘Hello’ this category. Ellie Goulding, who won Critics’ Choice in 2010, is nominated for ‘Love Me Like You Do’, which is also nominated in the British Artist Video category this year.

BRITs newbies Philip George and Little Mix both receive their first ever BRIT Award nominations this year. Philip George’s debut single, ‘Wish You Were Mine’ spent three weeks at No. 2 in the UK singles chart. Little Mix scored their third UK No. 1 with ‘Black Magic’, which is also nominated for British Artist Video.

Since 2009, Calvin Harris and Olly Murs have a huge 12 BRITs nominations between them but both are still waiting for their first BRIT. Jess Glynne was nominated twice in the British Single category last year for her featured vocals on Clean Bandit’s ‘Rather Be’ and Route 94’s ‘My Love’ but lost out to Mark Ronson and ‘Uptown Funk’. This year, will ‘Hold My Hand’ take the crown?

Completing this category is Ed Sheeran & Rudimental with ‘Bloodstream’. Rudimental won the British Single BRIT in 2014 for their track ‘Waiting All Night’ but Sheeran has previously been nominated twice in this category, failing to win on both occasions. Will the the added clout of Rudimental help him to win this year?

The nominees for the British Single BRIT Award are automatically chosen based on overall sales and streaming success for 2015.

The BRIT Awards 2016 take place at London’s O2 Arena on 24 February and will be broadcast live on ITV at 8pm GMT. See all the nominations here.
